A number of cosmetic dentistry problems can necessitate the use of dental crowns. Teeth that have been worn down over time by improper bite or decay, and teeth that have been chipped or cracked can be covered and reinforced with a dental crown. The crown will protect what remains of the tooth and restore the appearance of a whole tooth. Although dental crowns can restore and protect the visible portion of a damaged tooth, they will only work in cases where the root of the tooth is still healthy and intact. If the root is damaged, Dr. Chrisman or Dr. Wyse will suggest other restorative options that are available at our Bloomington, Illinois practice, such as bridges or dental implants.
Placing Dental Crowns
The process of placing a dental crown typically begins with careful reshaping of the original tooth. The dentist will anesthetize the area of the tooth to be crowned, then remove any decayed material as well as any healthy portion that may need to be eliminated in order to prepare the tooth for the dental crown. The amount removed depends on the condition of the tooth and the type of dental crown being used. Once the tooth is prepared, an digital scan will be taken so that the dental crown can be made to precisely fit the tooth. At this point, the patient is given a temporary crown to protect the tooth until the next visit, when the permanent dental crown is placed.
Natural-looking Dental Crowns
Traditionally, dental crowns have been made out of metal. These are strong and long-lasting, but terribly conspicuous. Newer dental crowns can be made from porcelain or resin materials that hold up well and look like natural teeth.
For teeth that have sustained only minor damage, such as a tiny chip or cavity, or teeth that are discolored or misshapen, dental bonding may provide a relatively easy solution. The preparation for dental bonding is minimal and rarely requires any anesthetic. The process can be done in a single session at our Bloomington, Illinois office, usually lasting between 30 and 60 minutes for a single tooth. Multiple teeth will require more time and, in some cases, more than one session. This will depend on the extent of the work to be done.
The Dental Bonding Process
First, the dentist will select the proper shade of material to match the color of your natural teeth. Then he will prepare the tooth by roughening the surface and applying a solution designed to help the dental bonding material adhere. Then the material itself is applied. When the resin is in place and reasonably smooth, it will be hardened with a plasma light. After that, the dentist will further polish the dental bonding material until it is as smooth and shiny as the surrounding teeth.
Maintaining Your Smile after Dental Bonding
Teeth enhanced with dental bonding need only the same care as natural teeth to remain healthy and clean. Proper brushing and flossing practices should be observed, and regular dental checkups should be scheduled in order to keep all of your teeth at their best.
Porcelain veneers can mask significant cosmetic defects with minimal removal of the existing tooth body. Porcelain veneers are a popular way to solve a wide variety of problems, and the results can be dramatic. For further information about porcelain veneers, read more on our porcelain veneers page.
