Comfortable, Gentle Extractions

If you require a tooth extraction due to an impacted wisdom tooth, an infected tooth that root canal treatment cannot save, or other dental issues, you can count on our Bloomington, IL, practice to make your extraction as comfortable as possible.

Why Are Extractions Necessary?

Decay or Damage

If a tooth is too damaged by trauma or decayed by bacteria to be repaired with a crown, root canal procedure, or a filling, extraction at our Bloomington, IL, practice may be the best solution.

Overcrowding

Many patients don't have room in their jaw for all their teeth. Some teeth may block others from erupting or put pressure on neighboring teeth, increasing the chance for other health issues.

Severe Infection

If the pulp in a tooth's root canal is infected with bacteria, the decay can spread to the jawbone tissue supporting the tooth. In this case, root canal treatment to remove the pulp may not save the tooth.

Impacted Teeth

When teeth fail to erupt properly and become trapped in the gums or jaw, they can cause pain, infected tissue, swelling, crowding, and decay. Wisdom teeth often become impacted and require surgical removal. Our dentists can safely perform all aspects of wisdom teeth extraction, so you do not need to see an outside endodontist.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

We can provide you with a tooth extraction to uphold your oral health and prevent future problems.
We can provide you with a tooth extraction to uphold your oral health and prevent future problems.

Preparation

Before your extraction procedure, we will take an X-ray of the area to precisely plan your treatment. For wisdom teeth, we may also take a panoramic X-ray to assess the position of your wisdom teeth in the jaw and their relation to your sinuses and nerves.

Anesthesia

On the day of your procedure, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. If you are concerned about the extraction or need multiple teeth removed, we can provide sedation to ensure your comfort.

Extraction

If your tooth is above the gumline, your dentist will gently loosen it and remove it from the socket. If it is impacted or below the gumline, your dentist will need to make an incision in the gums. Your dentist may divide the tooth to make it easier to remove.

Sutures

Once the tooth is removed, your dentist will close the extraction site with sutures. Your dentist will place gauze over the area to minimize bleeding and encourage a blood clot to form. You will be asked to gently bite down on the gauze to apply pressure, and the bleeding should stop once the blood clot forms.

Recovery

You will be sent home with detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth and prevent dry socket. Your dentist may prescribe oral antibiotics or pain medication.
