Porcelain veneers, available to residents of Bloomington, Peoria, Champaign, and Decatur, Illinois at Chrisman & Wyse Cosmetic & General Dentistry, can be used to easily create dramatic improvements in the appearance of teeth. Porcelain veneers, a popular method of cosmetic dentistry, can cover teeth that are chipped or malformed and lengthen or enlarge teeth that are too small for the space they occupy. They can also mask badly discolored teeth that cannot be adequately lightened with tooth whitening treatments. Porcelain veneers can even make crooked or overlapping teeth appear straight in much less time than it takes to straighten teeth with Invisalign® or traditional orthodontics. To see how porcelain veneers have been used to create beautiful smile makeovers, view our cosmetic dentistry before and after photos.
The placement of porcelain veneers begins with the preparation of the teeth. To make room for the porcelain veneers, a little less than a millimeter of the surface of each tooth will be removed, leaving a roughened surface which will be easier for the veneers to adhere to. Then an impression will be made and temporary veneers will be affixed until the next appointment.
Each veneer is created to fit a specific tooth in a patient’s smile, using dental impressions and other specifications sent by the dentist to the dental lab that crafts the porcelain veneers. Dr. Chrisman and Dr. Wyse insist on top quality and only use the finest porcelain veneers available in the Bloomington, Peoria, Champaign, and Decatur, Illinois area.
When the porcelain veneers are ready, the patient returns to the dentist for placement. Before affixing the porcelain veneers, the dentist will check them for fit, color and aesthetics. The patient will have a chance to see them in place and assess the appearance. If necessary, the shade can be adjusted slightly with the color of cement used to affix the porcelain veneers to the teeth.
Once both dentist and patient are satisfied with the fit and look, the porcelain veneers are cemented in place. A cleansing solution is applied to the tooth to remove any bacteria or minute debris and enhance the bond of the cement. The special cement and the porcelain veneers are then applied tooth by tooth. When the veneers are in place, an ultraviolet light is used to harden the cement, and the process is complete.
Porcelain veneers are as easy to care for as natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing, along with regular dental checkups are all that is necessary to keep porcelain veneers bright and shining for years to come.
