Meeting the Dental Needs of Our Teen Patients By Dr. David Wyse on December 18, 2014

Teenage girl with a straight, white smileAt Chrisman & Wyse Cosmetic & General Dentistry, we want patients to create a lifelong relationship with the dentist. It is important to see the dentist starting in childhood and continuing on into the elder years. While the basis of good dental care remains the same over the years, as patients enter different stages of life, unique and specific dental needs are likely to arise. For instance, teens are likely to require orthodontic treatment, which is why we offer Invisalign® invisible braces to comfortably and discreetly straighten the teeth. However, that is just one service that we offer to teens. At our Bloomington office, we offer dental care for teens that will help to maintain good oral health, prevent advanced dental problems, and treat oral health concerns as they develop, all of which will benefit the strength and beauty of the smile.

Dental Exams and Cleanings

Regular dental exams and cleanings are a service that can benefit all of our patients. However, these cleanings can be particularly beneficial to teens. We find that many of our teen patients are leading very busy lives. Between school, sports, social obligations, and other extra-curricular activities, it is not surprising to see oral hygiene habits slip a bit. By upholding at least twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings, we can help our teen patients keep the teeth clean as well as diagnose and treat any signs of decay or damage as soon as possible. This helps our teen patients maintain a healthy smile that looks attractive, which can give a big boost in confidence to teen patients.

Tooth-colored Fillings

Even with regular exams and cleanings, it is not unusual for teens to develop some degree of decay. We offer tooth-colored fillings to restore the strength of the teeth while maintaining the aesthetics of the smile. We understand that the teen years can be difficult for many of our patients, and those teens do not want anything that will make them stand out or look different than their peers. Tooth-colored fillings repair damaged teeth but blend in with the smile so that patients maintain a white, attractive smile.

Invisalign®

Alignment problems are common among teens. The teenage years are when many patients require orthodontic treatment to straighten the teeth and improve the bite. Invisalign® invisible braces straighten the teeth as traditional braces do, but they offer teens an option that is much more discreet, comfortable, and convenient. Using a series of clear, plastic aligner trays (which can be removed for eating and brushing the teeth), we can apply pressure to the teeth that will gradually shift the teeth into proper alignment. A straight smile is achieved without the use of wires or brackets, providing teens with maximum comfort and allowing them to avoid the look of bulky, silver braces.
